Hair Reminders
Please remember that we have a dress code for hair. Boys’ hair may be no longer than the eyes , the bottom of the ears, and the collar. Faddish, radical or unkempt hairstyles and unnatural hair colors are to be avoided by all students (boys and girls).
We have seen some guys with hair that is creeping past those standards and a few girls with dyed hair lately. It was implied that since one student seemed to "get away" with it, that it was okay to do it. This is very dangerous thinking to teach your children. Please remember that we have over 500 students to monitor, and we don't always see these things. Once we do, it puts us in the uncomfortable position of telling your child they cannot attend classes or perform at the concert unless this is fixed. It is similar to the traffic cops - they can't catch everyone, but if they do catch you for speeding, you can't just say "Well, everyone else was speeding too!"
Please help us out here and monitor your own child's hair/clothing. The last thing we want to have to do is to speak to them about it for you.
Spirit Day!
This Wednesday, April 24, students will be able to show their Northern Lights Marching Band pride by wearing their NLMB shirts instead of their polo shirts. If you don't have a Marching Band shirt, you may wear a patriotic shirt (anything red/white/blue) instead. Feel free to keep those black polos clean for the concert if needed.
Rehearsal Schedule April 24
All classes will meet at the regular times (unless your teacher has told you otherwise.) Classes not listed will meet in their regular rooms.
Also, the gym will be off-limits during class time. There will be no real "social hall" this week. Families are welcome to hang out in the Hub, but the noise level must be kept to a minimum to avoid disrupting classes in the Chapel Lobby. Thank you for your patience and cooperation on this one day we need the gym for rehearsals. If your kids need to let out steam, you are very welcome to take them outside.
Concert Help Needed
We still need more help to make our concerts run smoothly this week. We especially need help with stage crew and clean up. Sign up today if you haven't already!
Since we don't have enough room monitors signed up, room parents will need to monitor students while they are warming up. All parents will need to monitor their own students when they are not warming up or performing. If your student does not return to his seat after performing, you will need to track them down. All students need to sit with their parents during the concert. Students will not be allowed to sit by themselves in the gym.
Another thing we really need help with is helping your students who have back-to-back performances. Make sure you know where they need to be at all times. Speak to their room parents/teachers if they need help getting from one performance to the next (for example, students who are in a handbell group immediately before or after their orchestra group.) Make sure your student knows where to go and where their instrument will be. We need to keep our groups moving so that we can avoid having an overly long concert. Please don't assume that someone will come looking for them or that their group will be able to wait indefinitely for them.
Marching Band News
We have a great group of kids signed up for Marching Band this year! If you haven't been getting the Marching Band News and Notes, you probably aren't signed up yet. If you think you did but haven't received the emails, please check your parent portal and make sure your classes aren't still sitting in your cart. If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late! We'd love to have you join us!
Missed out on a yearbook?
If you missed out on a yearbook or if you want to order more, we have received enough interest to reopen our orders and do a second printing!
If you were one of the twenty people who put your name on our waitlist, please go to shop.yearbookmarket.com/wmhfagrandrapids to pay for your yearbook(s).
If you did not but you want to order one, please go to shop.yearbookmarket.com/wmhfagrandrapids to order yours!
(If you want to pay for it via existing credit on your account or by cash or check, please email [email protected]. All credit card payments must be made at the link above.)
Orders will be accepted until May 6, so don't delay. The second printing will be available for pickup at Corinth the week of band camp (June 3-7 from 8am to 4pm.)
If you didn't get a chance to see one, stop by the desk. They look awesome!
Dress Code Clarification for this Wednesday
For this Wednesday, Marching Band Dress code is in effect. This means that t-shirts and jeans are allowed. However, jeans (or any other pants) must not be too tight, overly faded, ragged, or have any holes. Shirts should be marching band or patriotic themed (think red, white, and/or blue) and modest. We want you to have fun with our spirit day, but still keep in mind our "clean, neat, and modest" guideline. (i.e. don't abuse it or you'll lose it.)
Concert Warm-Up Room Change for Orchestra
The Beginning and Intermediate Orchestras will be meeting at 9am on Saturday in the Chapel Lobby instead of the Zone. This will give you a bit more space.
Please remember that we have a dress code for hair. Boys’ hair may be no longer than the eyes , the bottom of the ears, and the collar. Faddish, radical or unkempt hairstyles and unnatural hair colors are to be avoided by all students (boys and girls).

Important Information
Weather Policy
Grand Rapids - Classes will be cancelled if Byron Center Public Schools are cancelled due to weather.
Kalamazoo - Classes will be cancelled if Schoolcraft Public Schools are cancelled due to weather.
Email, App Notifications, and Facebook posts will be sent out shortly after 6am to announce any cancellation of classes. Notices will also be posted on local television and radio websites. Please Note: WMHFA families come from all over West Michigan, therefore the weather in one area may be fine while another area may have hazardous roads. If classes are not cancelled, please use your discretion in deciding to make the drive. We want everyone to arrive safely!
Text Messages
We have a texting service for important notifications. You can adjust your texting options in your parent portal.
Parents: Go to Dashboard > Billing & Payments > Contacts > Edit > Basic Info > Contact Info, click to enable Allow text messaging? and click Save.
Students: Go to Dashboard > View (student name) > Edit (pencil) > Basic Info, click to enable Allow text messaging? and click Save.
Absences
Missing Your Work Shift
While we do take attendance in class, it is helpful for our instructors to know if your student will be absent and why. Absences can be reported through your parent portal. Under the menu, select Absences and Makeups. Our teachers will receive an email automatically if you do this, so there is no need to email them individually!
Sickness Policy
You can check on your student's progress in class through the parent portal. We use the Absence feature to make notes about participation in class. You may notice your child has an absence for a day when you know they were actually there. However, if you look at the notes for that "absence" you will find more information. They may be marked as "IT" or "Insufficent Time." This means they didn't practice enough that week. You may find that their card wasn't signed by a parent ("NS" or "No Signature".) Or maybe they never turned their practice card in and were marked as "NC" or "No Card." If your child didn't get enough practice time but there was a valid reason, please write that in on the practice card and the room parents will note that on the record as well. Illnesses, vacations, or instruments in the shop would be examples of things that are valid reasons to not have enough practice time.
Extra Performances for Advanced Groups
Our more advanced groups often participate in extra performances apart from the concerts. We expect all of our students to participate in these performances as well as the concerts. Our ensembles work together as a group, and when one member is missing, it affects the performance of the whole group. While there will be times when a student needs to miss a performance, it should be rare and only for extenuating circumstances.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's attendance at a performance, please talk to us about it. Communication is key if there will be a scheduling conflict.
Advanced Groups which may have extra performances include:
