2025 Solo & Ensemble Overview

Date: March 8, 2025
Location:  Corinth Reformed Church, 129 100th St, Byron Center
Times: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

​Registration will start in January.

​
Registration Deadline: February 8, 2025 - registrations received after the deadline subject to $25 late fee per event. (No late registrations after February 15.) No refunds will be available after the deadline.


Fees:

Solo & Ensemble Fees (all ensemble fees are the cost for the complete ensemble):
   Solo:                                   $15
   Duet:                                  $30
   Trio:                                   $45
   Quartet                              $60
   Quintet                               $75
   Sextet                                 $90
   Septet                                 $105
   Octet                                  $120
   Chamber 9-20 players          $15/person

Non-WMHFA students may participate with a $15 surcharge per event. 

Student Eligibility
All instrumental students grades 4th and above with at least one year of experience (first year students may participate upon recommendation of their private instructor if there is availability.)

 Instruments: 
  •    Woodwinds: flute, piccolo, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano sax,  alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax
  •    Brass: trumpet, trombone, horn, tuba, euphonium
  •    Percussion: snare, timpani, mallet/keyboard percussion instruments 
  •    Strings: violin, viola, cello, bass
  •    Piano
  •    Harp

Events Rule Highlights (download detailed rules above)
  • If a solo has an accompaniment, it must be played live at the event.  Technical studies and etudes should not encouraged to be used as solo except for those that are traditionally treated as solos.
  • All Solo for students 4th – 8th grade need to be at least 1.5 minutes in length and no more than 5 minutes in length.
  • All solos for 9th -12th grade and All ensembles need to be at least 2 minutes in length and no more than 6 minutes in length.
  • All ensembles, except chamber ensembles, are to have one player on a part. 
  • Chamber events must be at least 3 to 4 different parts, with the director determining the doubling of parts.
  • High School Solos have the option of clinic or honors track
  • All events are 10-15 minutes long
  • Clinic Track Solos  (solos for 4th-8th grade students and high school students choosing clinic track) and all ensembles and will receive a short clinic following their performance using most of the time remaining in the 10 minute time allotment.
  • ​Rating will be earned as a Division I, Division II, Division III, Division IV or Division V
  • Medals will be awarded to all Division I and Division II events
  • Honors Track Solos will perform a proficiency that includes a solo, scales and sight-reading – piano will add an invention or fugue.
  • Proficiency 1 – for all ninth grade students or 10th, 11th & 12th grade students who have not passed Proficiency 1.
  • Proficiency 2 – for all tenth grade students who have passed proficiency 1 or 11th & 12th grade students who have not passed Proficiency 2.
  • Proficiency 3 – for all eleventh grade students who have passed proficiency 2 or 12th grade students who have not passed Proficiency 3.
  • Proficiency 4 – for all 12th grade students who have passed proficiency 3
  • Honors track participants will earn the opportunity, based on the score from their performance, to perform their solo at the WMHFA Spring Concert and possibly earn a scholarship.
  • Rating will be earned as a Division I, Division II, Division III, Division IV or Division V
  • Medals will be awarded to all Division I and Division II events
