Colorguard Classes
(Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo)
  • Intro to Color Guard sessions will be held from September to December for new students enrolled in Foundations Guard. This optional extension to Foundations Guard is an informal time to focus on fundamentals and is strongly recommended to get new students up to speed with basic skills. Returning students wishing to improve their skills are also welcome. There is no extra charge for these sessions.
  • Foundations Guard is a foundational level guard. Students will learn basic choreography with flags and other props.
  • Intermediate Guard is an intermediate level guard where students are ready for more challenging choreography. Other equipment such as rifles and/or sabers may be introduced at this level based on class interest and instructor discretion.
  • Advanced Guard is an advanced level guard where students will learn advanced color guard moves at a quicker pace. Other equipment such as rifles and/or sabers are also incorporated at this level.

For concerts, all guards will perform a short routine set to music showing the skills they have learned during each semester. Movement and some dance techniques will be incorporated at each level of guard.

Classes are grouped by experience. Students will remain in the same level for the entire year. A teacher evaluation at the end of each year will determine if the student is invited to move to a higher level of guard for the next school year. (Marching Band students will remain in the same level guard as they were in for the current school year.)

To participate in Color Guard during Marching Band, girls must be enrolled in a color guard class during the school year or have at least one year of class experience. Girls must be age 8 by September 1 to participate during the school year, and age 9 by September 1 to participate in Marching Band.
